NEW BOOK OF COMICS, #2, 1938

Inventory No: CHV-004

Issue: #2

Year: 1938

Publisher: D.C.

Description: THE FIRST COMIC BOOK SUPERHERO, SIEGEL & SHUSTER'S DR. OCCULT, MAKES HIS FIRST COMIC BOOK COVER APPEARANCE AS A SUPERHERO HERE! NBOC #2's interior is also of great importance, as it presents two chapters from the historic story known as the "Superman-tryout" tale (the episodes presented here originally appeared in More Fun Comics #15 and #16). Many other 1930's DC characters, drawn by some of the most important creators of the era, are also featured in NBOC #2 along with Dr. Occult, both on the cover and inside. NBOC #2 is rarely offered in high grade, and has long been considered a collector's treasure. It was the second DC annual ever issued in the prized modern-style "squarebound" format.

ADVANCED COLLECTORS PLEASE NOTE: NBOC #2 may have the first DC superhero cover image! CGC lists NBOC #2's date as "Spring 1938," which presumably means that NBOC #2 was actually released prior to Action Comics #1 (which has a June 1938 date). This contender for "first DC superhero cover image" is a scene of Dr. Occult wearing a cape and holding a sword (which was taken from a panel originally published in More Fun Comics #15).

CONDITION: the cover is brilliantly colorful and the interior pages are off-white. According to the CGC census as we write this, ours is the second best example of this historic book that CGC has ever graded. It has been awarded CGC's UNRESTORED Universal Grade of 7.5. Furthermore, CGC did not note any flaws on their tag whatsoever (certification #0035019001). Top price guide value as we write this, for those who are interested, is $15,500. SCANS: Because this is an important comic book, we are providing three scans. These include the front and back covers of the comic in the CGC holder. We also have a scan of this comic which we made before we sent the book to CGC. We are showing this final scan in order to illustrate how bright and extraordinary the front cover of this comic really is. The yellows are vivid, the red is vibrant, and the title area is still white! This is a magnificent book.

Imagine owning the second highest CGC-graded example of what is arguably one of the most important comic books ever published. That is the opportunity that we are offering here.

Grade: 7.5
